Head Start/State Preschool programs are currently in operation at seven elementary schools within ABC Unified School District. Children attend school Monday- Friday for 6 hours.

Program Enrollment

The California Department of Education, Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), and Office of Child Development establish the guidelines for service eligibility. Priority is given to children who are three years old and meet all the guidelines by the start of the new school year. The family’s gross yearly income cannot exceed the income ceiling established by the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department. To determine if a family meets the guidelines to participate in program the following documents must be presented to Head Start staff for review:

Proof of Income (1040 Tax Return, CalWorks, SSI, or any other documentation of any other sources of income)
Proof of Residency in the form of a utility bill (gas, electric, water, or ID with the same address as the application)
Child’s Birth Certificate
Immunization Record
Child’s Medical Insurance Card

Waiting List

A waiting list must be develop at the beginning of each enrollment year. The waiting list is based on where the child ranks, according to the selection process criteria, as required by LACOE Head Start.

About Head Start

The Head Start program is federally funded through the Administration of Children and Families (ACF), the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and the State of California with ABC Unified School District.

The Head Start Program is designed to meet the needs of preschool children from low-income families and children with disabilities. Children are enrolled in the Head Start program for one to three years, depending the child's age, prior to entering Kindergarten.

As part of the Strategic Plan, ABC Unified School District has made student achievement a priority. The Head Start program encompasses this vision and, in concert with the district, strives to achieve “School Readiness” for all children in the program. To ensure a healthy development of the whole child and a successful transition into primary education, children will develop pre-academic skills and achieve developmental milestones.
